Why are we locking up children like adults?

New York is one of just two states in the country that treats 16 year-olds as adults in the criminal justice system. Treating children like hardened criminals is exactly the wrong approach: it scars them both physically and emotionally, making them more likely to commit crimes in the future. It's time to treat kids like kids in New York State.

It is baffling to know that a 16 year old can be sent to Rikers and face a reality much harsher than the actual crime committed. With the obvious evidence of how juvenile reform programs can and have been proven effective, it is sickening to know New York continues to institutionalize adolescences. At the age of 16 your perception of risk and rationality is in no comparison of that of an adult. There has to be alternatives, there are alternatives and the alternatives work.

And yet there are no Wall St Bank Execs going to prison! What kind of fools have we become.
